Walking

If you would like to breathe the very best fresh air, enjoy beautiful scenery and nature come to Leitrim and experience the many looped and linear walks that will suit walkers of all abilities. There is the Miners Way, the Leitrim Way and the Historical Trail. There are sections on these trails to suit both the leisurely walker and the very fit more committed walker.

The Leitrim Way is 48km in length. It starts in Drumshanbo and takes a route along the eastern side of Lough Allen following narrow country roads and tracks both old and new. Part of the walk overlooks Lough Allen through beautiful scenic unspoilt countryside. The easiest route continues to Manorhamilton but it is also possible to include Dowra. The longest stretch is between Dowra and Manorhamilton approx 20 miles. To complete the total walkway it will take about 2 days but it is also possible to do it in stages.

The Miners Way and Historical Trail is a 118km (80miles) long figure of eight walking trail that starts and ends in Arigna, crosses three mountain ranges- the Curlew Mountains, Corry Mountain and Brickliane Mountain, passes through three counties – Sligo, Roscommon and Leitrim and overlooks three lakes- Lough Allen, Lough Arrow and Lough Key. Also on the trail is the Arigna Mining Experience, an interpretative centre relating to the history of coal mining in the locality. Many of the entrances to the old mines are still open but they are not safe to explore and should be avoided. It takes 5/6 days to walk this challenging trail which consists mainly of tarmac country roads, tracks across fields, open moorland and forestry paths. Within this trail there are a number of loops for which I have maps and will be pleased to supply any walker who would like to attempt this very scenic and interesting walkway
