Watersports
County Leitrim has many lakes, rivers and canals well suited to provide many water sports such as angling, surfing, kayaking, canoeing and paddle boarding. Recently the Shannon Blueway was opened, the first of its kind in Ireland. It provides paddling and walking routes along the Lough Allen Canal and the River Shannon from Drumshanbo to Battlebridge, Leitrim Village and on to Carrick –on-Shannon. It is the first stage of the Blueway and it is planned to extend it further into the future. So all water enthusiasts can now take their paddle boards or canoes and experience the joys of the waterways for a half day or a full day if they so wish. There are also a series of looped walks which can be undertaken over a two hour or four hour period.
There are a number of water activity providers in the area who can give tuition to the beginner or act as guides for those who would benefit from highly trained coaches who are very familiar with the waterways.
It is best to book in advance if you would like some lessons or to make sure that the weather is safe for water activities.
